Company of One: A fascinating perspective on running a small & profitable business

Company of One is one of the most remarkable business books I’ve read in a long time.

Paul Jarvis questions the traditional definitions of success and growth, in this book. He presents a refreshing, alternative and at times counterintuitive perspective on building and growing a business.

He brings alive how a highly profitable business can be run with small scale operations, especially in today's digital and automation era.

He emphasises on creativity and ingenuity, which often thrive while working under constraints.

His focus on extraordinary customer service and customer education to fuel sustainable growth are compelling concepts.

Also the idea about building authority as a countermeasure against the might of big brands, is fascinating. His stand on polarising content got me riled up for a while, until I was able to see merit in it.

Paul's focus on building a sustainable business that supports the lifestyle you want to live, is a much needed conversation, especially in a business world that’s dominated by the ‘growth at any cost’ narrative.

He illustrates the dangers of an obsessive growth mentality while citing examples of companies that have grown too fast and paid the price. Paul insists that growth should be intentional and not ‘growth for the sake of growth’.

This book is full of nuggets and insights to run a small and profitable modern business.

While doing business this way may not appeal to all, this book does question conventional and often outdated ways of running a business, irrespective of the size of business. A thought provoking book, it may inspire you to question some of your beliefs and business practices too.
